Teaching method

TP classes. Mandatory Seminars. Visits to industrial plants (if possible).

Evaluation method

Students will have to take a seminar and 2 evaluation tests.

If possible, a study visit may be made (Galp, Repsol, Hovione, Iberol, Central de Cervejas) if the companies are available to receive the students.

Evaluation - tests:

The final grade is equal to 0.70 test score + 0.30 seminar grade

The minimum grade of the first test should be 9.5

Evaluation - exam:

The minimum grade of the final exame should be 9.5

The final grade is equal to 0.70 exam score + 0.30 seminar grade

Subject matter

For the most significant chemicals, the study of the following aspects is included:

- Raw materials

- Chemical reactions and separation processes

- Block diagram of the process according to the indication of the main licensors, where available

- Differences to alternative processes

- Recycling of raw materials, recovery of by-products, energy recovery

- Conversion rates

- Catalysts and catalysts recycling

- Consumption of utilities. Investment value where available by the licensors

- Product applications

- Reference to production units in Portugal

- Typical production capacities

- Investment value and production costs

Areas of expertise and processes to be addressed:

- Oil refining

- Production of light alkenes

- Synthesis gas production

- Production of ammonia, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, methanol and synthetic fuels

- Production of polymers (polyethylene)

- Biomass conversion processes. Biorefineries

- Biotechnological processes (bioethanol and biobutanol)

- Enzymatic processes (synthetic sweeteners)
