Sustainable Development Policy and Strategy
Objectives
- Knowledge of the origins and evolution of environment and development policy;
- Knowledge of global institutions and governance;
- Acquisition of competences to build, implement and follow Sustainable Development Strategies at different scales, in association with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations;
- Understanding of the fundamental principles of Public Law and Environmental Law; acknowledgement of the main environment-related regulatory instruments and their application.

Environmental Law, case studies and jurisprudence.
Teaching method
A combination of different teaching methods is employed: lectures, debates and seminars with invited speakers; development of practical assignments that integrate the course materials. The module on Public and Environmental Law will be lectured by invited Environmental Law specialists under a partnership agreement.
Evaluation method
Evaluation is based on written assignments and their discussion, plus the participation of students in class debates.
Subject matter
1. Environment and sustainability policy: origin and evolution; global institutions and governance; the UN system and other multinational institutions.
2. Construction, implementation and follow-up of sustainable development strategies: existing frameworks and their mapping; governance for sustainability; identification and dialogue with stakeholders; selection of participatory methods; follow-up and communication methods; implementation and decision-making processes.
3. Public and Environmental Law: general principles of Law, law-making and interpretation; environmental law in Portugal; environmental law in the EU and international; environmental liability and environmental NGO; environmental litigation; production of proof in a court of law; major trends.
