Mathematics
Education objectives
The BSc Degree in Mathematics at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT) has recently been restructured. The new curricular plan was launched in the academic year 2022/2023. The first two years provide the adequate background of mathematical foundations for further studies in both fundamental and applied mathematics. In the third and final year, the student selects the subjects of his or her liking to graduate in one of three profiles: Mathematics Profile, Statistics and Risk Management Profile, and Operational Research Profile. Also in the third year, in the period between semesters, complementary competence courses are offered, consisting of an Introduction to Professional Practice Program or, alternatively, an Introduction to Scientific Research Program, both highly appreciated by students. The plan also provides student mobility, based on a vast network of Erasmus agreements with European universities.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The BSc in Mathematics at NOVA FCT is a course with consistently low unemployment. A Mathematical degree from NOVA FCT is a passport to easily get a job as an Analyst, Consultant, Statistician, Teacher or in more recent professions such as Data Scientist, among other options. A graduate in Mathematics can be employed in Companies in the retail, logistics and transport sectors (building mathematical models for planning, development and operation of these companies); Information management companies (analyzing data, elaborating statistics, using optimization to transform data into information); Research laboratories (describing and modeling phenomena, planning experiments, to capture, interpret and predict reality); Elementary and secondary schools (preparing new generations for the future). It is known that a mathematician thinks differently. This feature of the mathematicians is increasingly recognized and appreciated by employers who seek in these professionals the added value they provide through innovative ways of approaching problems.

Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of two elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
