Geophysics

Objectives

Present a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of each major branch of geophysics: gravity, seismology, geochronology, thermodynamics, geoelectricity, and geomagnetism.

At the end the student must:
-know the main methods of geophysical prospecting, as well as understand the potential and limitations of each;
- be able to process, represent and interpret data from the application of the studied methods;
- master some laboratory and field techniques in geophysical prospecting;
- be able to transmit information, problem solving, critical reasoning and apply, in an autonomous way, theoretical knowledge in new situations.

Evaluation method

Article 1 – Knowledge assessment method
According to the FCT Knowledge Assessment Regulations, the assessment in “Geophysics” falls under the Continuous Assessment type.

Article 2 – Theoretical Component – ​​T
1. The assessment of this component is carried out through a knowledge test or exam.
2. The dates of the evaluation moments and information on how they were performed can be found in the Clip.
3. Within the scope of continuous assessment, 2 tests will be carried out throughout the semester, whose classification will be rounded to the nearest tenth.
4. The classification of this component (CT) is the arithmetic average, rounded up to units, of the classifications obtained in the tests or the classification of the final exam.
5. Students who obtain a CT rating equal to or greater than 10 values ​​pass this component.

Article 3 – Theoretical-Practical Component – ​​TP
1. Theoretical-practical classes are mandatory, with attendance records, for all students without attendance.
2. Frequently student is exempt from TP classes.
3. In these classes, problems on the subject taught in the theoretical classes will be discussed and solved.
4. The evaluation of the theoretical-practical component (CTP) is the arithmetic mean, rounded to the nearest integer, of the two best classifications obtained in the mini-tests that will be given in the theoretical-practical classes. Absences from mini-tests correspond to a grade equal to zero.

Article 4 – Practical Component – ​​P
1. Practical classes are mandatory for non-attendant students. These classes are complementary to the T and TP classes.
2. The classification of the practical component CP corresponds to the average grade of the works developed in the practical classes .

3. If the CP rating is greater than 9.5, the student passes the practical component

Article 5 - Attendance
1. Students who pass the practical component, and who actively participate in at least 2/3 of the practical classes and theoretical-practical classes, obtain frequency in this curricular unit.
2. Theoretical-practical and practical classes identified in the planning file with "Lab" are strictly mandatory for students without attendance.
3. The frequency obtained in the last two years remains valid.
4. Approval of the curricular unit requires obtaining attendance.

Article 6 – Final Classification
1. The final classification (CF) in this UC is the result of applying one of the following expressions, approximated to the unit:
CF = CT×0.7 + CTP×0.1 + CP×0.2    # for students who obtain attendance
CF = CT×0.7 + CP×0.3                       # for students attending before 
2. If the final grade is higher than 16, the student is admitted to an additional test (eg oral).
3. In the additional test, the student can raise or lower his classification, with a guarantee of a minimum grade of 16 values.
4. The absence of the additional test translates the acceptance by the student of the final grade of 16 values.

 

Article 7 - Grade Improvement
1. Students who intend to improve their grade must comply, for this purpose, with the legal formalities of registration.
2. The new final classification is obtained following paragraph 2 of Article 6, considering the exam classification as the new CT classification.
3. Students who obtain a final grade, by improvement, higher than 16 values ​​are subject to the conditions described in points 3 to 5 of Article 6.

Article 8 - Conduct in Class
1. In order for everyone to benefit from the learning experience, students are required to respect the following in class:
The. Punctuality: Students must be present in the classroom at the start of class. Teachers can prevent
the entry of students who arrive more than 5 minutes late;
B. Lecture preparation and discussion participation: Active participation requires students to prepare material
presented and discussed in class, and that contribute to the discussions.

Article 9 – Tests and Examination
1. Each test will focus essentially on all the subjects taught in the online theoretical classes until the class before the test.
2. Although the assessment in the tests is not cumulative, and due to the nature of the subjects covered in this Curricular Unit, it is not excluded that an assessment element relies on knowledge concerning the subject assessed in a previous element(s).
3. The timetable and test rooms will be published on CLIP.
4. Students can only have with them during the assessment test:
A. Pen;
B. Identification document with photograph;
C. Scientific calculating machine, non-programmable and non-graphical.
5. During the tests, it is not allowed to consult any personal or third party elements, beyond the
form distributed with the proof.
6. It is not allowed to unstaple the pages of the statement.
7. The race will be canceled if paragraphs 4, 5 or 6 are not satisfied.
8. Fraud situations, at any time of evaluation, will be treated as indicated in the regulation of knowledge evaluation of this Faculty.

Article 10 - Others
1. Students, when contacting the professors via electronic message (email) must indicate in the subject the following information: “Geophysics - Name – Student No. – Subject”.
2. Messages with questions whose answers appear in Previous Articles or on the course unit page on Clip will not be answered.
