Doctorate in Tropical Diseases and Global Health

Education objectives

The program aims to train motivated Doctoratestudents and that in the future may have international recognition for its research role in the international area and the countries of the Portuguese Speaking Community (CPLP), contributing to improve the health of individuals and communities in a global world and constantly changing.

The Doctorate in Tropical Diseases and Global Health should:

1. Have skills and capabilities in advanced research in your area of expertise, taking a comprehensive view on tropical diseases and global health;

2. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of theories and methods to address the prevention, diagnosis and control of tropical diseases;

3. Critically use techniques and tools to address the biomedical research issues and challenges of global health, particularly in low and middle income countries;

4. Apply a multidisciplinary approach to health problems;

5. Designing and conducting original research and competitive projects, characterized by conceptual and methodological rigor and respecting the ethical principles;

6. Communicate research results with various audiences, from scientists and policy makers to local communities.

Degree pre-requisites

Duration: 4 years (8 academic semesters). Total credits: 240 ECTS for the achieve of the Doctoratedegree (60 in curricular units + 180 in the preparation of the dissertation).

Conditions of admittance

> Candidates with a master's degree or equivalent in areas of Life Sciences and Social Sciences or similar, with a final mark of 14 points.

> Graduates in Life Sciences or related sciences and Social Sciences or legal equivalent, with a minimum final grade of 14 and an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognized by the scientific committee of IHMT as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies.

Each curricular unit (CU) is evaluated according to the criteria established by the Teacher in charge, which are available in the section "Evaluation method" in the "General characterization" tab of each CU.
The academic degree of the Doctorate is given a final classification in the range of 10-20 of the entire numerical scale from 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent in the European scale of comparability of classifications. The calculation of the final classification is obtained by weighted arithmetic average by the number of credits.
