Sustainable Healthcare
Objectives
The main objectives of this Unit are:- To know the structure of the Portuguese NHS
- To understand the main challenges for the sustainability of health systems in general and of the Portuguese NHS in particular
- Introduction to the issue of value-based healthcare
- Challenges of chronic diseases and aging for the sustainability of national health systems
- How to sustainably incorporate technological innovation in health systems
- Obtain basic concepts on the sustainability of health systems in Europe

Group work. 3/4 student groups will be responsible for choosing a challenge to the sustainability of the NHS and provide a solution in the light of the knowledge acquired in this course.

Philip van der Wees PT, PhD
Philip van der Wees is senior researcher at the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare (IQ healthcare) of Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands. He is also affiliated with Celsus, Academy of sustainable healthcare. His research projects are aimed at quality, implementation, and evaluation of healthcare. He leads projects for the use of patient-reported outcomes in several professions such as orthopedic surgeons, ENT surgeons, and physiotherapists. His research projects over the past years were aimed at development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines.
From 2010-2012 Philip was chair of the Guidelines International Network (G-I-N). In 2011 Philip was selected by the Commonwealth Fund for the Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice and he has worked at Harvard Medical School in Boston to conduct his fellowship. In 2012 he was also affiliated with the RAND Corporation in Boston to study the feasibility of patient-reported outcomes in performance measurement in an international perspective.
