Objectives
This course aims at providing students with knowledge on the role of banks, the framework in which they operate (both at the national and European level), and the main pillars of their management, notably on the specific risks to banking activities. The analysis of the latest news and trends will be important to analyze the main strengths and challenges of this sector.

Teaching method
Students will be confronted with different sources of information and learning techniques.
The formal lectures will make use of the bibliography and of news and other elements recently published or to be published at that time. They may also benefit from guest speakers providing an in-depth view of the topics under consideration.
Students will be invited to analyze case studies and present them in class. All students will form groups of 4 students (to be adjusted depending on the number of students enrolled). Each group will be assigned one case study. It will be required to submit a written report and make a presentation (or be a discussant) of that case study in class.
All students are invited to read all case studies to ensure their involvement in the class discussion.
The teaching assistant will allocate the case study to each group of students.

Final exam: 50%

Subject matter
The course explores the role of banks and presents the institutional framework in which they operate, including the supervision and resolution regimes. The forces currently shaping the landscape with a focus on payments and digital currencies will also be presented. In addition, the course will explore the main indicators of banks´ financial position and the different risks that the financial institutions are facing, including credit risk, liquidity risk, market risk, and operational risk. The current management practices will also accompany this analysis.
Finally, strategic considerations including mergers and acquisitions will be assessed including their potential impact on the overhaul of banks' business models.
