Statistics for Policy Action

Objectives

A course on statistical techniques and case studies. The course covers the classical vision on parametric statistics. This course introduces students to the basic concepts of Statistics with the aim of better understanding the real world, testing theories and making decisions in a context of uncertainty.

Teaching method

Students are welcome to bring their own devices (namely tablets or personal computers) to class as this is a BYOD course: they will need to be connected during classes to moodle and adequate sources of information in real time and to use Excel. The course will be driven through practical exercises and case studies. Students will learn several techniques that they will need to apply in order to solve exercises. Classes will be divided into individual and team building knowledge. Students will be graded every week for their learning effort by solving individual and group quizzes. Students with a strong background in statistics can additionaly do an introductory research project. 


Evaluation method

Quizzes (or Quizzes + Project): 30% (or 10%+20%)

Final exam (minimum grade 8 out of 20) 70%
