Master's in Public Health

Education objectives

The Master's program in Public Health at the NOVA National School of Public Health (NOVA NSPH) is designed to foster the development and acquisition of a scientific foundation and advanced competencies necessary for scholarly inquiry and research within the realm of Public Health.

With this objective in mind, students are expected to:

- Cultivate a comprehensive understanding of scientific principles, theoretical frameworks, and practical methodologies, thereby contributing to the enhancement of public health outcomes and the efficacy of health systems and institutions, both domestically and internationally;

- Develop the skills and capacity to conduct rigorous investigations and contribute to the body of knowledge and problem-solving efforts in key areas of Public Health, spanning diverse disciplinary domains;

- Demonstrate proficiency in critically appraising and systematically evaluating their professional practice, while actively engaging in research endeavors and collaborative projects, including participation in scientific forums and working groups dedicated to advancing the field of Public Health.

- Professional paths in various national and international institutions, public and private departments, and social sector services, where they can engage in activities across diverse domains of public health, including epidemiology, health policy and administration, environmental and occupational health, health economics, health planning, health promotion, among others;

In 2022, the Master's in Public Health at the Nacional School of Public Health (NOVA NSPH) was the only program in Portugal to be featured in the TOP 100 - 2022 ranking by the EDUNIVERSAL BEST MASTERS RANKING. Tuition fee for Portuguese citizens: 3.950,00 EUR (3.000,00 EUR in the first year and 950,00 EUR in the second)

Tuition fee for students with International Student status: 5.950,00 EUR (4.950,00 EUR in the first year and 1.000,00 EUR in the second)

Degree pre-requisites

The Master's in Public Health has a duration of 4 semesters, unfolding in two stages: a curricular phase (postgraduate course) lasting 2 semesters and the preparation and elaboration of an original Dissertation, specifically conducted for this purpose, taking place during the 3rd and 4th semesters.

Conditions of admittance

- Graduates in Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nursing, Health Technologies, Biological Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Engineering, Economics, Law, Sociology, Psychology, Administration and Management, Political Sciences, Educational Sciences and Communication, Human Kinetics, or in other areas recognized by the Course Coordination, related to Public Health;

- Proficient command of Portuguese and an adequate level of English (for reading purposes during the course);

- Strong motivation to work in Public Health.

Evaluation rules

The grading in each of the course units included in the curriculum is expressed on a whole numerical scale from 0 to 20 points, with approval requiring a minimum final grade of 10 points resulting from the evaluation elements established in each course unit.

The attendance of curricular units may imply prerequisites if so stated in their respective course unit records.
