Public Health
Objectives
In this unit the role of Nutrition will be explored in its relation with Health and Well-
Being recognizing the influence of socioeconomical, political, environmental and
cultural factors.
The main learning objectives are:
- Acquire basic knowledge of Public Health.
- Identify and characterize important problems in public health and public
health and nutrition, in Portugal and the World.
- To recognize and prioritize the health needs of individuals, groups and
communities.
- Understand the dynamics of the disease and its natural history, data sources
and main types of epidemiological study and measurement of data.
- Set appropriate and relevant strategies that contribute to Health Promotion
and control of major health problems.

Teaching method
Teaching will be split between theoretical and theoretical-practical components. In
the theoretical component the big areas of public health will be reviewed. The
theoretical-practical components will be conducted through group work (4-5
students) promoting data collection and analysis and its use in practical contexts.
PDF files to support classes will be available on the Moodle Platform. The recordings
of the theoretical classes will be made available in a folder on OneDrive.
There will be no recording of TP classes.
Evaluation method
Evaluation will reflect individual and group assessments either through group
presentations (the task in theoretical-practical classes) and through short individual
quizes (multiple choice/short answer questions).
