Pathology 1

Objectives

The general objectives of this course are:
1 - To know and to understand the basic principles of disease (causes, mechanisms,
lesion processes);
2 - To acquire skills of observation and deduction in order to be able to identify and
interpret the morphological changes, (tissue, cellular and molecular events)
responsible for the different types of disease;
3 - To use the technical pathological vocabulary, adequately

Teaching method

Cognitive skills are acquired through familiarization with the concepts and their
use in the form of problem-solving exercises. The practical skills are developed in
the form of individual.
Expositive classes and Seminars are designed to transmit the educational content
of the course in a synthetic way. The main aim of these classes is to establish the
concepts of disease and its morphological expressions in order to promote
knowledge of the basics of diseases (causes, mechanisms, disease processes).
Practical classes have specific practical objectives for each theme to guide the
individual study and are designed to train the observation and deduction skills; to
learn how to identify and interpret morphological changes through individual
observation using gross specimens and histopathological glass slides. The tutorials
and autopsies and problem-solving cases classes will also contribute towards these
goals using more complex models of interpretation and discussion of clinical-
pathological cases, which include medical histories, macroscopic records, and
histopathological preparations. The domain of technical vocabulary and
application of the knowledge will be achieved this way.

Evaluation method

The theoretical contents integrate Lessons (asynchronous) and synchronous
Seminar, for discussion of main processes of disease. Attendance is voluntary.
Practical classes focus on demonstration of knowledge and a final practical test
using morphological pictures. Attendance is mandatory in these classes.
Evaluation: 1) continuous evaluation in practical classes (10%) and final practical
test (15%) corresponding to 25% of the final grade) if there is not the technical
possibility of a simultaneous and identical practical test to all students, this
evaluation corresponds only to 10% of the final mark; 2) final examination
(written - remainder 75% or 90%). Students must pass both components.
