Basic Microbiology

Objectives

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit
The Unit's main objective is to introduce students to the study of Medical Microbiology, namely
regarding the bacterial agents responsible for infectious diseases.
The program, both theoretical and practical, aims to provide future physicians with the knowledge that
will allow them to use the appropriate language for medical microbiology.
At the end of the course, students should be able to identify the main pathogenic bacteria and have
general notions about medical virology, mycology, and parasitology. Identify good laboratory practice
procedures and specific safety rules for the medical microbiology laboratory. Recognize the laboratory
tests necessary for the correct identification of the microorganism associated with human disease.

Teaching method

Theoretical classes are taught by the teachers of the curricular unit, according to their respective
specializations. These classes will be given on a b-learning basis (presential and recorded lessons).
The practical classes, lasting two hours per week, are organized in groups of about 11-12 students and
guided by a teacher.
Time changes are not allowed; if the student is not able to come in his schedule, he can request to attend
at another time, but will always be absent that week.
The UC evaluation is carried out through the evaluation in a final exam (100%).
Student Assessment
Assessment during the period of classes - 25% in which the student will be excluded if the classification
is less than 9.5 values.
- Mandatory: Frequency of practical classes (2/3 of the total attendance)

Evaluation method

- Mandatory: Frequency of practical classes (2/3 of the total attendance).
- The evaluation will be performed in 3 moments, by response to a multiple-choice test. The two best
rankings will be chosen.
-Final written exam - 75%: 50 questions test, multiple-choice.
