Public Health and Epidemiology

Objectives

- Knowledge and application of epidemiological research methods to both clinical and
population health fields of investigation.
- Enunciate and describe basic epidemiologic methods, namely study designs and mesures of
risk and their interpretation.
- Identify, evaluate and ponder exposure and outcome measures and results in the context of
Public health.
- Identify and assess Pro¿s and Con¿s of epidemiologic methods and study designs (without and
with comparison groups) when searching for scientific evidence and critaeria for evaluating
causality.
- Identify and judje associations of exposures and outcomes on their soundness in the health
context. Acknowledging potential biases and confounders.
- Assess and discriminate diagnostic from screening tests. Prevention, early detection and
screening. Validity and reliability of screening tests. Recommendations and criteria for
screening programs.
- Understand and translate scientific results to prevention and control of Health conditions
and care.
- Train and exercise critical thinking and a systematic approach to epidemiologic studies.
- Analyze, interpret and communicate results orally and in writing.
- Produce an original paper.

Teaching method

Classes include magistral lectures on constructs for health, health determinants, public health,
health provision and health systems and basic epidemiologic methods.
The sessions of a theoretical-practical nature address the epidemiological concepts and use
illustrative case studies, their analysis and critical appreciation, which will allow the student to
acquire skills to participate and critically appreciate the various scientific and ethical aspects and
implications of epidemiological research and the use of epidemiological information in a clinical,
hospital, community, public health, or Hospital Administration and health systems, including
epidemiological and statistical methods and Information.
Team based learning will be provided for some TP sessions (10%)

Evaluation method

Evaluation and grading componentes include exam (50%), research scientifc paper and work
presentation (40%) and TLB sessions debate (10%)
