Immunology

Objectives

The aims of the education of the discipline of Immunology in the 3rd year of the
medical curriculum, are:
- That students at the end of the semester have knowledge about the
constitution of the Immune System and on the defense mechanisms of the
immune response.
- That students know the immune mechanisms inducing pathologies and in
which ways the Immune Response can be modulated.
- That students understand the dynamics of the knowledge contained in a
science with rapid development that is integrated in all other medical sciences.
- That students acquire competences in the major areas of Immunological
disorders, namely Immune Deficiencies, Hypersensitivity Reactions,
Autoimmunity, Lymphoproliferative Diseases, Tumoral, Transplantation and
Pregnancy Immunology, as well as in the diverse applications of
Immunotherapies.
The theoretical Course aims to approach theoretical concepts. The theoratical-
practical course shall include practical demonstrations and hands-on activities of
the most relevant laboratorial technologies, as well as interactive discussion of
clinical cases.

Teaching method

The course is organized in 14 weeks of theoretical classes and theoretical-practical
classes. Theoretical-practical classes will be presential and last 120 minutes, and
the theoretical classes will be 2 periods of 45 minutes, made available on a digital
platform.
Handhouts of the theoretical and theoretical-practical classes will be provided (i.e.
recordings and documents in pdf format of the theoretical classes, and documents
in pdf format of the theoretical-practical classes), as well as scientific articles,
available on the moodle platform.

Evaluation method

The course evaluation format will be ¿distributed throughout the semester, with a
final evaluation test¿, in accordance with article 12 of the Pedagogical Council's
regulation.
The distributed evaluation will take the form of two periodic assessments carried
out in classes TP 6 and TP 13, within the hours assigned to each class, followed by
a final evaluation test (covering all theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical
contents).
The periodic practical assessments will include topics discussed in theoretical-
practical classes, each test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions, 5 options per
question, with only 1 correct answer, and with a quotation of 1 value per question.
Each test will last 30 minutes, and the final classification of this component will be
the average score of the two tests, rounded to the tenth.
In case of failure in this component (final grade <9.5), the student will have to take
a practical test of appeal, addressing all the concepts from the theoretical-
practical classes. Only students who have scored less than 9.5 in the practical tests
can attend the practical test of appeal.
The practical test of appeal will be a multiple-choice test with 40 questions, 5
options per question, taking place during the hours of Class TP 14. In each question
there is only one correct option, each question having a score of 0.5 points. The test
will last for 60 minutes.
If a final classification higher than 10 (¿9.5) is not obtained in any of these options,
the student will not be able to take the final exam, failing the Curricular Unit.
The final test will be an exam on the QuizzOne platform (1st season) or oral exam
(2nd season and special season). The final theoretical test on the QuizzOne platform
(1st season) will consist of a multiple-choice test with 80 questions, 5 options per
question. In each question there is only one correct option, each question having a
score of 0.25 points. The test will last for 120 minutes.
For approval at the Curricular Unit, a minimum classification of 10 (¿9.5) values in
each of the assessment components (theoretical and practical) is mandatory. In
case of failure in the Curricular Unit, students will have to repeat all assessment
components the following year.
7
Students without final approval in the Curricular Unit, which have been present in
at least 2/3 of the TP classes, will be exempt from attending them in the following
academic year.
