The Elderly Patient

Objectives

This Curricular Unit (CU) aims to deliver knowledge and competency in Gerontology and
Geriatrics, in a comprehensive view of the individual, integrated with the teaching of the
CU´s of the Integrated Master in Medicine of NMS|UNL.
At the end of the CU, the students should be able to:
- Identify manifestations of biological ageing;
- Differentiate disease specificities of elderly people;
- Include the concepts of functionality and frailty in clinical practice;
- Perform cognitive screening in the elderly;
- Identify disturbances in the nutritional status of the elderly;
- Identify geriatric syndromes;
- Identify polypharmacy and know how to apply a deprescription plan;
- Have basic notions of chronic pain control in the elderly patient;
- Outline an individual care plan, in accordance with an integrated multiprofessional
approach;
- Acquire basic concepts of health promotion in the elderly;
- Knowing and applying a care transition plan;
- Basic knowledge of palliative care, ethics and decision;
- Basic knowledge of oncogeriatrics.

Teaching method

Theoretical Classes include recorded classes with syllabus (see Point IV), in-person seminars
and remote work classes.
Theoretical-practical classes can include 4 modalities:
1. TBL (team base learning) - theoretical-practical sessions to review theoretical
topics and apply the knowledge acquired by teams, in groups of 60 students;
2. Simulation - in 5 stations, with training of various gestures necessary for the
evaluation of the elderly patient;
3. Hospital Session - in this session, each student will have the opportunity to make a
global geriatric assessment of an elderly person and the respective integrated care
plan. Each student will go to each Hospital once, in groups of 10 students;
4. Seminars - Thematic seminars are interactive contact classes with experts in the
field and serve to deepen knowledge in the area of neuropsychiatric disorders,
oncogeriatrics, care transition, global geriatric assessment and integrated care
plan.

Evaluation method

Assessment - will weight with 35% the evaluation carried out by the professor in the TBL
sessions (15%), Simulation (10%) and Hospital Sessions (10%) and with 65% an individual
written evaluation test at the end of the semester.

- Concept of geriatric syndrome, its detection and related factors;
- Concepts of functionality and frailty;
- Multimorbidity, polypharmacy and deprescription;
- Chronic Pain in the Elderly Patient;
- Physical function, Sarcopenia and risk of falls in the elderly;
- Palliative care and ethics and decision-making;
- Old age persons with neuropsychiatric disorders: a general approach;
- Assessment of the nutritional status of the elderly;
- Physical rehabilitation of the elderly;
- Health promotion programs for the elderly;
- Care transition;
- Oncogeriatrics;
- Comprehensive geriatric assessment and individual care plan, according to ethic
and legal aspects, in accordance with an integrated multiprofissional approach.
