Objectives

I. To recognize the role of psychiatry and mental health in medical practice,
integrating its scientific, clinical, and humanistic dimensions.
II. To frame mental health problems in a biopsychosocial perspective, with a public
health and human rights matrix.
III. To value the influence of personality and family, sociocultural and therapeutic
matrices in the genesis and evolution of psychiatric diseases and situations of
psychological suffering.
IV. To describe the clinical manifestations of psychiatric disorders, principles of
treatment and indications for referral to specialized psychiatric services.
V. To conduct a psychiatric clinical interview, placing the person in their social, work
and family context.
VI. To know the different approaches to mental health problems: promotion,
prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation/recovery.

Teaching method

The teaching is carried out within the scope of a practical internship in a psychiatry service
that includes tutorial teaching, clinical seminars, and assignments. Student activities must
include the following dimensions:
(i) Introductory Lecture (on the 1st day of each block - FCM main building)
(ii) Nine clinical seminars, to be prepared in advance by the students (FCM main building).
(iii) Clinical rotation with tutor (e.g., wards, hospitalization and/or consultation).
(iv) Preparation of clinical history, to be discussed with the tutor.
(v) Critical review of scientific paper, selected by the tutor.
Seminars are mandatory, and have the following sequence:
a) Assessment of knowledge, based on tutorials and materials previously available on the
Moodle platform.
b) Brief presentation, to reinforce the core aspects of the most relevant issues.
c) Discussion of clinical reports (previously available on the Moodle platform).
d) Final remarks, with emphasis on the therapeutic approach.

Evaluation method

The evaluation results from the combination of two components:
a) The practical grade: continuous assessment + classification of clinical history and critical
review prepared during the internship - 20% of the final grade.
b) The oral exam grade (can be substituted by MCQ if necessary) - 80% of the final grade
- Final approval is subject to participation in at least 2/3 of the internship, with no
supplementary regime for students without minimum attendance.
- In Special Season exams ¿ 8o% exam grade + 20% practice
- In Grade Improvement exams ¿ oral exam (not replaceable), 100% final grade.
