Objectives
- Communication in Paediatrics, basic concepts, clinical interview;
- Paediatric medical history taking with focus on reason for admission/
consultation, current illness, personal and family history, problems,
objective examination, therapy and follow-up; and summary;
- Differential diagnosis of the most frequent signs and symptoms in
paediatrics;
- Theoretical knowledge in outpatient pathology and serious diseases of
children and adolescents (respiratory, neurological, nephro-urological,
cardiovascular, metabolic, gastrointestinal, renal, haematological,
infectious, endocrinological and current surgical pathology).
- To recognise and be able to manage urgent/emergency situations such as
shock, coma, trauma, surgical emergencies, respiratory failure,
dehydration.
- To be familiar with the different routes of drug administration: oral,
intravenous, intraosseous.
- To prescribe oral and intravenous solutes, antibiotics and other medicines.
- Have knowledge and practice of paediatric resuscitation procedures.
- To be familiar with the basics of paediatric palliative care.

Teaching method
Lectures - 41 lectures per semester of 50 minutes, covering the main paediatric
medical pathology and surgery. Classes will be recorded with 6 face-to-face contact
classes.
Theoretical-practical classes - In the area of Paediatric Cardiology, classes are held
in groups of up to 12 students (Wednesdays, from 9am to 1pm, at Hospital de Santa
Marta). Each student must attend one class.
In the area of Medical Paediatrics, team-based-learning sessions will be held, in a
module of three consecutive blocks, in the last week of the internship of each class.
This week should be reserved for this purpose.
Clinical practical classes - take place from 9am to 1pm in the ward or in the context
of an emergency service/consultation/operating theatre. The student may stay in
the afternoon according to the availability of the assistants, to make the most of the
internship. Students must also complete one week of Paediatric Surgery at Hospital
Dona Estefânia, up to 12 students per week, of which 6 will stay with surgery and 6
with orthopaedics for 3 days each, changing mid-week.
Simulation classes - simulation and technical classes for groups, which take place
from the second to the fourth week of the internship, on Tuesdays and Fridays, from
2pm to 4pm, with about 8 to 9 students, to review clinical situations with training
in techniques and procedures (airway and vascular access, lumbar puncture). Each
student must attend one class.

The contents of the lectures cover current pathology and frequent and serious
clinical situations in paediatrics, starting from the "signs and symptoms" to the
differential diagnosis of diseases, their therapy, prognosis and follow-up: Clinical
interview in paediatrics; Introduction to therapy/prescription in paediatrics;
Simulation in paediatric teaching; Poor weight progression; Jaundice; Diarrhoea
and vomiting; The child with fever; Water and electrolyte balance; Changes in acid-
base balance; The child with cough; Signs and symptoms of the upper airways;
Interpretation of X-rays in paediatrics; The child with jaundice; Antibiotics in
paediatrics; Infectious rashes; Recurrent infections in paediatrics; Sepsis and septic
shock; Signs and symptoms of heart disease; Congenital heart disease; Arrhythmias
and acquired heart disease in paediatrics; The child with oedema; Urinary infection;
