Objectives

a) To improve knowledge of the specific problems faced when translating texts in the area of Social Sciences and the Humanities.


b) To develop translation skills in the above­mentioned area.


c) To be able to critically evaluate different kinds of translations.


d) To develop critical knowledge of the practice of translation in the field of Social Sciences and the Humanities.


e) To be able to recognize and use translation resources for this specific field.

Teaching method

Practical and theoretical classes, using texts from different Social Sciences and Humanities, with a strong interactive component on the part of the students. The practical component includes oral contributions by the students.

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - Class and out of class student work (one third of the final mark), two practical tests (one third of the final mark) and a practical and theoretical final test (one third of the final mark).(100%)

Subject matter

1. Portuguese as the essential element for a good translation.

2. Theoretical issues in translation. The translation challenge. Untranslatability. Translation and identity.

3. Translation of texts from the Social Sciences and Humanities: Anthropology, Communication Sciences, Geography, History, Philosophy, Literature and Sociology.
