Translation Practice: Social and Human Sciences (Portuguese to Spanish)

Objectives

a) To acquire translation skills into the foreign language in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities.
b) To develop linguistic proficiency in written Spanish.
c) To analyse the specific characteristics of various texts.
d) To build awareness of the differences between the two languages.
e) To develop analytical skills and flexibility.
f) To become familiar with and employ a variety of research tools in order to develop translation competences.
g) To develop the ability to reflect upon and self­assess one's own translations.

Teaching method

Analysing and translating texts from Portuguese to Spanish. Correcting texts translated by fellow students. Systematizing of translation knowledge in general and of human sciences knowledge in particular. Creating conceptually organized glossaries. Searching for examples of similar translations. Evaluation tests and their correction. Reflection on translation processes and strategies.

 

Evaluation method

Evaluation Methodologies - Cumulative work effort (developed throughout the semester) on comparative grammar and on both Portuguese and Spanish culture(30%), Three individual translation written tests, face-to-face and/or online (15%, 15%, and 40%)(70%)

Subject matter

a) Specific features of Portuguese to Spanish translation.
b) Practice in translating into the foreign language a variety of text types in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities (journalistic texts, papers, calls for papers, abstracts, essays, manifestos etc. from Anthropology, Communication Sciences, Geography, History, Philosophy, Literature and Sociology).
c) Translation issues (specific terminology, false friends, phraseology).
d) Error analysis.
e) Constrastive features of Portuguese and Spanish.
f) Tools to help with translating texts and problem­solving strategies (corpora, databases, specialized dictionaries, glossaries and parallel texts in Spanish).
