History of France: topics and problems

Objectives

1. To acquire knowledges about the linguistic, cultural, politic and social history of France.

2. To understand contemporary France in its different aspects (linguistic, cultural, political and social) through several moments and facts that have marked its history.

3. To develop the ability to relate French historical facts to the history of Portugal and / or other countries.

4. To develop the ability for reflection and discussion about the studied issues.

5. To develop the ability to write short written essays about some of the studied issues.

Teaching method

Lectures and discussion about different topics of the syllabus. Assessment of knowledges implies a minimum of 2/3 of class attendance as well as the submission of a research paper which should show knowledge of the studied issues as well as the ability to deal in a critical manner with the concepts covered in the course.

Continuous assessment - Participation/Continuous assessment(20%), Research paper(40%), Written Test(40%)

1. linguistic perspective: birth, expansion and current situation of the French language in France and in the world. 
2. cultural perspective: French cultural diffusion abroad, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. 
3. political perspective: evolution of the State concept in France, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. 
4. social perspective: France, host country.
