Audiovisual Translation and Subtitling
Objectives
1. To acquire and develop research competences in audiovisual translation (AVT), so that students will be able to a) carry out autonomous research work in this area; b) show in-depth understanding of key issues and current debates in AVT research; and c) provide informed justification of AVT practice.
2. To acquire and develop AVT (and especially subtitling) competences, so that students can a) translate complex audiovisual material in demanding situations; b) apply relevant solutions for specific challenges of dubbing, voice-over and, especially, subtitling; and c) show critical understanding of subtitling software and (inter)national subtitling conventions.
3. To develop service provision and interpersonal competences, so that students know how to a) comply with the highest ethical and professional standards; and b) constructively interact with different stakeholders and participate in different workflows in AVT industry.

Teaching method
This unit will be mainly practical, combining three main teaching methods:
1) individual and team subtitling activities, with authentic AV material, a gradually increasing complexity, and a resort to dedicated subtitling software;
2) students' oral participation during the correction of activities, as well as group discussions on the challenges, the research leading to the analysis of alternative solutions and the decision process;
3) guest-lectures on key topics by AVT researchers and hands-on workshops with (inter)national professionals from the AVT industry.
Evaluation method
Continuous Assessment - Final group work based on a simulation of a real-life AVT project with various deliverables, accompanied by a reflective blogue about different aspects of the project(35%), In-class test (subtitling activity)(45%), Quality,regularity and punctuality of all the assignments (10%); and quality and regularity of oral participation (10%)(20%)
Subject matter
1. Key concepts of AVT: multimodality, source text, target text, translation problem, and solution;
2. History, typology and characteristics of different AVT modalities: subtitling, dubbing, voice-over, media accessibility, audiodescription and SDH;
3. New topics in AVT research: creative subtitles, templates, machine translation, cloud tools and their impact on workflows and quality in AVT;
4. Subtitling mechanics: spotting/time-cueing in simple and complex scenarios (with and without a script, with and without a template file or via a pivot template); national and international layouts and formatting conventions;
5. Subtitling challenges: subtitling cultural references, humour and language variety;
6. Professional ecosystem of AVT from client awareness and negotiation to project management and quality assurance: agents, functions and workflows;
7. Ethical issues in AVT.
