Phonology

Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
(a) describe and analyse suprasegmental aspects of phonology, with special reference to the phonology of European Portuguese, on the light of multilinear theoretical approaches;
(b) problematize phonological topics, in particular those concerning European Portuguese.

Teaching method

Classes are mainly theoretical and lectured, promoting the discussion of problems and questions raised from key texts. Active and relevant participation of the students is highly reinforced.

Continuous assessment

In-class participation - 20.0%

Critical essay - (30% for the oral presentation + 50% for the written work) - 80.0%

1. Multilinear phonology: assumptions, descriptions and representations - Prosodic and Autosegmental Phonology;
2. Prosodic constituents: description, analysis and evidences - prosodic word, phonological phrase and intonational phrase;
3. Stress and Rhythm: comparative perspectives - languages and varieties.
