Teaching method

The course is planned as a seminar, involving the planned participation of students with different types of interventions: presentations on the topics of the program, critical reviews, results from previous work (practical revision tasks, advisory consultancy on linguistic questions, research based on corpora), critical appreciation of different aspects of the reference instruments, problem solving.

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - One written essay, supervised by the teachers, and oral presentation and discussion(60%), Students' participation during the seminar(40%)

1. Linguistic standardization: general background
2. Instruments for linguistic standardization
Definition and characterization of reference instruments (grammars and dictionnaries) and dissemination works(vocabularies, guides, manuals). Criteria for selecting instruments according to the users' goals.
3. Reference grammars of Portuguese
Fundamentation and criteria for the definition of 'standard language' and 'correction'. (In)adequacies of grammars tothe needs of their users. Areas where there are contradictions between grammars and/or other instruments and tools.Strategies for solving problems. Instable areas in the Portuguese language.
4. Portuguese dictionnaries
Fundamentation and criteria for selecting main reference works. Relevance of dictionnaries for the standardization oflexical uses. Fixation and flexibilization of lexical choices (preferential hierarchies).
