Problems of Musical Representation
Objectives
a) Identify problems of music representation in Lisbon, and elsewhere, with theoretical reference within the thirteen decades of the ethnomusicological domain;
b) Acquire knowledge around ethnomusicological approaches on representation of music in cultural policy at national level;
c) Develop conceptual tools for critical thinking around related literature and field observation on the thematic in focus;
d) Develop the ability to problematize specific issues defending general and particular interests and pointing out research strategy according to their main benefit;
e) Can reliably apply the knowledge acquired in the preparation of ethnographic records in different media to present, critically argue and discuss.

Teaching method
The curricular unit is taught in a seminar regime of active and collaborative learning centered on the student, with a first exploratory, experimental part focused on the city of Lisbon (50%). Skills are developed linking field observation, critical perspective from theoretical notions in relevant recent literature and applicability of perspectives learned in the expression of concrete cases. The second part focuses on the research interest of each student (50%), through a short Research Essay focusing on specific problems of music representation for each case.
Evaluation method
Continuous assessment - Critical expression and discussion of a problem of representation of music, in the proposed theme(50%), Discussion and presentation of a Research Essay related to the research interest(50%)
Subject matter
Following the students' research interests, the contents of the UC include:
1. Problems of Music Representation, in diverse uses and functions in/as of Lisbon/Portugal, theoretically framed;
2. Pointing out perspectives, publications and authors with relevant production on the proposed theme within the disciplinary historical path and the Social Sciences;
3. Critical approaches around one of the central themes in the discipline: the social representation of music;
4. Selected recent case studies directly and indirectly related to the proposed theme and research interest;
5. Construction and presentation of written and filmed records of research revealing knowledge acquired around the proposed theme and the interest of each one.
