Objectives

a) Acquire an overview of the theoretical corpus of Psychology of Music and Music Pedagogy and their possible fields of work.
b) Develop critical analysis skills towards the Psychology of Music and Music Pedagogy.
c) Apply knowledge of the scientific research methodology in the analysis of the scientific literature.
d) Develop research skills, emphasizing collecting and selecting information.
e) Identify and formulate original problems in the Psychology of Music and Music Pedagogy domains.
f) Acquire skills in the design and writing of scientific articles and research projects.

Teaching method

Presentation of scientific contributions emerged from these areas of specialization. Stimulation of analysis and discussion based on contributions submitted. Brainstorming sessions towards identifying problems and research topics to be addressed by students. Discussions following the literature search and the definition of research topics selected by the students to draft a plan for preparing an article or scientific research project. Classes attended by invited experts in these areas or cross-cutting areas.

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - 1) A document consisting of reflective summaries (maximum: 1000 characters) for each class and 2) A document bringing together an annotated list of references on the research topic selected by students. In addition to the formal data of the reference, each bibliographic entry should be a summary/review (maximum: 1000 characters)(100%)

Subject matter

1. Psychology of Music and Music Pedagogy: Fields of work and research questions. Historical elements.
2. Problems, observation, and evaluation of musical behavior. Introduction to the study of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
3. Critical analysis of some contributions in the fields of Psychology of Music and Music Pedagogy: i) Edwin Gordon's work regardingevaluation and measurement in Psychology of Music with repercussions for Music Pedagogy; ii) Studies in the acquisition of musicalcompetence; iii) Studies in the performance of musical and artistic excellence: social and psychological variables; iv) Works on children'smusical development. Application to studies about artistic performances for children.
4. Databases for bibliographic research and literature review of research topics selected by the students. Application of guidelines andstandards for writing papers and research projects.
