PhD in Translation and Terminology
Education objectives
It is intended that students acquire:
- skills to conceive, design and conduct high quality scientific research in the areas of the course;
- skills to analyze, appraise and process complex scientific information;
- competence to investigate, with progressive autonomy, the subject of the thesis, discuss the various stages, difficulties and results of their work profitably, thus contributing with knowledge, methodologies and new products to enrich these domains;
- skills to communicate the results of research undertaken and to present and discuss issues within their area of specialization with the scientific and technical community and to present their findings to society in general.
This programme enables professionals to work in the production of scholarship and in professional settings (in the fields where translation and terminology are applied; scientific and technological institutions, businesses, education, etc.).

Length: 6 semesters.
Total credits: 180 credits (60 ECTS accomplished in course units of the study programme; 120 ECTS refers to Thesis).
The degree of doutor corresponds to the level 8 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.
Conditions of admittance
Candidates who can be admitted to this programme include: a) Holders of an MA degree or legal equivalent; b) Holders of an undergraduate degree, with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, officially recognized by the institutions granting the degree as attesting ability to successfully complete this study cycle; c) Holders of an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, officially recognized by the institutions granting the degree as attesting ability to successfully complete this study cycle.
Evaluation rules
The study course leading to the doctoral degree includes the completion of a doctoral program that consists of curricular unit aimed at training for research; the realization of an original thesis, designed especially for this purpose, appropriate to the branch of knowledge or expertise. The seminar curricular units type are classified on a scale of 0-20. The final classification of the PhD course is expressed by approved or not approved formulas. In case of approval, the final classification of the PhD course is expressed in the range 10-20 on a scale of 0-20, doing the arithmetic average of the marks in which the curricular units with 10 ECTS. The final classification of the thesis is expressed by formulas approved or refused by justified nominal vote with no abstentions.
