Phonetics

Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
(a) describe the mechanisms involved in the articulation, acoustics and perception of speech sounds;
(b) identify different methods and techniques for speech analysis and speech recognition;
(c) transcribe words and sentences in European Portuguese, using different phonetic alphabeths;
(d) autonomously use tools for speech sound manipulation and analysis.

Teaching method

Classes will have a theoretical component and a practical/laboratory component. In the theoretical component, definitions, descriptions, and demonstrations will be presented, while in the practical/laboratory component, students will engage in activities to apply their knowledge through transcription exercises, diagram analysis, sound manipulation, and acoustic analysis.
