History of Portuguese Music

Objectives

a) To acquire knowledge on the historical processes related to music in Portugal from the Middle Ages to the present in relation to thesocio-cultural context of each period.
b) To get to know the main primary sources, the bibliography and the discography available to study the History of Music in Portugal;
c) To have contact with research projects devoted to aspects of Portuguese music;
d) To be able to identify aesthetic trends, personalities, institutions and musical repertoires;
e) To build bases for a critical analysis of concepts of periodization and historical contexts and for the study of the processes of music production and reception in Portugal.

Teaching method

The teaching method will combine the presentation of the historical issues with a number of analyses of scores, audio-visual examples, musicological texts, historical documents and phonographic recordings.

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - Class attendance and active participation in the discussions(10%), Review of a scientific article on a theme of the history of music in Portugal(30%), Two written tests [30% + 30%](60%)

Subject matter

1. Sources for the study of music in Portugal (general synthesis, case studies, encyclopedias and dictionaries, anthologies, onlinedatabases).
2. Medieval sacred music. Iberian 'troubadour' repertoires.
3. Musical life from 14th to 16th centuries. The Royal Chapel and the polyphonic 'schools'.
4. The rule of the Philips. The main centres of sacred polyphony. Secular and instrumental music in the 16th and 17th centuries.
5. The Italianization of musical activity during the reign of João V. Church music, opera, instrumental and domestic music in the 18thcentury.
6. The hegemony of Italian opera in the 19th century; religious music; music education; concert societies; the reaction to Italianism in thelate 19th century.
7. Impressionist, nationalist and neoclassical tendencies during the first half of the 20th century.
8. The emergence of the cultural industries (radio, phonography, film).
9. The post-II World War avant-garde.
10. Music in Portugal in the early 21st century.
