Urban Geography

Objectives

a) To master the meanings of urban space;
b) To understand the diversity and the development of urban spaces (time and space);
c) To analyze the form and the structure of the urban space;
d) To analyze cities, urban networks and urban systems;
e) To understand the mechanisms to build and rebuild the urban space;
f) To identify elements in the urban landscape;
g) To develop critical thinking about urban indicators (population, urban fabric, accommodation, economic activities, among others).

Teaching method

Expository and participatory classes (50% of teaching time).
The expositive classes are deeply illustrated with examples where the aim is to present the various aspects that are common to all cities, along with the natural specificity of each city.
Practical classes, group work (50% of teaching time).
The practical work focuses on the analysis of a parish in the city of Lisbon, and uses information from the Geographical Information Referencing Base (INE, 2011). It also includes a study trip to the Lisbon downtown.

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - Attendance and participation(10%), group research project(40%), written exam(50%)
