Master in Urban Studies
Education objectives
It is intended that students acquire reflective and operative competences in the following levels:
a) Aptitude to interpret and use analysis concepts and methodologies regarding the new socioeconomic and urban change dynamics and to put to question the contemporary period urban territories complexity.
b) Skills to produce original scientific research projects, as well as to create and apply diversified urban territory intervention instruments.
c) Ability to communicate information, perspectives, problems and solutions, either among specialists and in face of the diverse implicated actors;
d) Aptitude to design and execute intervention diagnoses, plans and projects, fittingly up to date and based on a multidisciplinary approach.
e) Ability to critically process the urban studies area technical-scientific knowledge, enabling the transition in the direction of a university third study cycle and the sustained lifelong training.

Degree pre-requisites
The Master in Urban Studies is created in association between NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities and ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon.
Duration: 2 years/4 semesters
Total credits: 120 ECTS, distributed among 36 in compulsory curricular units and 36 optional (6 in free-elective optionals, 24 specific and 6 TEP) and 48 in the dissertation or project work.
The degree of "mestre" corresponds to the level 7 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.
Competencies:
a) Ability to interpret and use concepts and methodologies to analyse the new dynamics of socioeconomic and urban change and to problematize the complexity of contemporary urban territories;
b) Ability to construct original scientific research projects, as well as the creation and application of diversified intervention instruments in urban contexts;
c) Ability to communicate information, perspectives, problems and solutions, both to specialists and the variety of involved stakeholders;
d) Ability to design and implement scientifically informed diagnostics, plans and intervention projects based on a multidisciplinary approach;
e) Ability to critically process technical and scientific knowledge in the area of urban studies, enabling the transition to a third cycle of university studies and lifelong training.
Conditions of admittance
Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely: - to hold a licenciado degree or legal equivalent; - to hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH; -to hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH. Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict.
Evaluation rules
A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the post-graduate diploma. The final grade of the post-graduate diploma is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Masters course. A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the Masters degree. The final grade of the Masters degree will be the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation or project work, weighted to 60%.
