Postgraduate Course in Teaching Portuguese as a Second Language
Education objectives
It is expected that students should develop the following knowledge and skills:
(a) Knowledge of key concepts and issues in the domain of teaching / learning a non-native language;
(b) Knowledge of documentation and reference tools for teaching / learning (Portuguese as) a non-native language;
(c) The ability to describe and analyse Portuguese language forms and constructions;
(d) Knowledge of the specificities of Portuguese in different geographical, political and social contexts;
(e) Knowledge of the process of acquiring Portuguese as a non-native language from a perspective of application to teaching;
(f) Knowledge of specific methodologies for teaching second/foreign languages;
(g) Ability to adapt the contents and strategies adopted in class to the specific profiles of students;
(h) Knowledge of existing materials and resources for Portuguese as a non-native language;
(i) Ability to critically assess, adapt and design teaching materials and resources according to the teaching context, learning objectives and students' profiles;
(j) Knowledge of different types of assessment practices and ability to develop assessment instruments for Portuguese as a non-native language appropriate to the specific characteristics of the target audience;
(k) Ability to explore Portuguese as a language for specific purposes in a school context;
(l) Ability to recognise the importance of intercultural education in multilingual contexts;
(m) Ability to critically about assess their own pedagogical practices.

Degree pre-requisites
Total credits: 60 ECTS based in the compulsory curricular units.
(1 ECTS - European Credit Transfer System = a 28-hour workload).
Conditions of admittance
Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely: - To hold a degree (1st cycle), or legal equivalent; - To hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council (SC) of NOVA FCSH; - To hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae, recognized by the Scientific Council (SC) of NOVA FCSH. Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict.
Evaluation rules
The program follows the evaluation regulation from the host institution. Each course unit describes in detail the evaluation methods. 1) The frequency of previous course units is not required. 2) The evaluation of the student’s learning achievements is done individually and is completed at the end of the semester. Students’ evaluation may include final written and/or oral exams, essays, assignments or other evaluation elements undertaken by the students in each course unit as required by the lecturers. The grading is expressed on a scale from 0 to 20 points. 3) Any student who obtains a final grade equal to or above 10 points passes the course unit.
