Postgraduate Course in Visual Studies - Photography and (Post) Cinema
Education objectives
The course has two main aims:
• To introduce students to the key concepts, theoretical and practical frameworks and conceptual tools of Visual Studies;
• To provide specialised training in the area where Photography Studies and Film Studies converge, namely with regard to the relationship between the two, the importance of the contemporary documentary, the audiovisual essay as a critical tool, and the work with photography and film archives.
By the end of the course, students should:
• Be acquainted with the main issues that define the field of Visual Studies;
• Be acquainted with keys aspects of the history and theory of photography and film;
• Be able to understand the main changes in these media throughout the 20th and 21st centuries;
• Be able to discuss and critically appreciate the privileged use of photography and film within the contemporary Visual Arts scene;
• Be able to grasp the cross-cutting nature and importance of photography and cinema in the contemporary experience of the world;
• Be able to write a coherent, structured and well-grounded essay about a set of images, film or visual artwork (if they wish to be assessed);
• Produce an audiovisual project within the modules specifically designed for that purpose.

Degree pre-requisites
Total credits: 60 ECTS (10 credits based in the compulsory curricular units and 50 credits to be chosen in a set of elective optionals).
(1 ECTS - European Credit Transfer System = a 28-hour workload).
Conditions of admittance
Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely: - To hold a degree (1st cycle), or legal equivalent; - To hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council (SC) of NOVA FCSH; - To hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae, recognized by the Scientific Council (SC) of NOVA FCSH. Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict.
Evaluation rules
The assessment regulation adopted is the one in force at the host institution. Each module describes the assessment methods in detail. 1) No prerequisites are required to attend the postgraduate course modules. 2) Knowledge is assessed on an individual basis at the end of each semester. This assessment takes into account written and/or oral tests, assignments or other coursework submitted by students within the scope of each module and according to the conditions defined by each lecturer. The result of the assessment is presented on a scale from 0 to 20. 3) Students are required to score at least 10 to pass a module.
