Glass and Ceramic Art and Science
Education objectives
Both ceramic and glass share several essential raw materials and also the similarity of some manufacture processes and mechanical properties of the final products. This affinity and the advantage of working in common territories led to the creation of the VICARTE - Glass and Ceramic for the Arts (www.vicarte.org), a transdisciplinary research unit, exploring the intersection between Art and Science and allowing the promotion and sharing of knowledge and methodologies between these two fields.
The Master in Glass and Ceramic Art and Science creates an innovative program and the possibility of effective transdisciplinarity between fields related to art and science. This course aims to introduce glass and ceramics as materials to be explored for use in art. In the depth of this parallel and cross treatment, in its reflection and practice, the conditions for the emergence of new results are created. It is hoped that along this route, students will explore these relationships in the scope of authorial signalling, improve critical skills and benefit from training and streamlining communication skills and dissemination of results as an integral part of the projects being worked on.
Career opportunities
It is the objective of this master to give artists and designers the fundamental tools to develop an artistic activity or to be integrated into the design industry of the ceramic and glass, contributing to the increase of creativity in these areas.
This master´s degree is also open to graduates in exact sciences, who will be able to bridge the gap between art and science and contribute to innovation in various technological processes involving these materials.

An interview the candidates may take place if the Course Scientific Committee of the Study deemed as necessary, ranked in a scale from 0 to 20.
Candidates will be chosen in descending order related to the scores ranking.
Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UC is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UC with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
