Master in Chemical and Biological Engineering
Education objectives
This cycle of studies awards a Master of Science degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering, accredited by A3ES (Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation of Higher Education) and by the professional order of engineers with the EURACE certificate. Students are enrolled in an advanced training program in chemical and biological engineering, leveraged in the cutting edge scientific research of its faculty, in tight connection with national and international industries in the areas of energy, environment, materials and (bio)pharmaceuticals. It balances a broadband formation, with high employability, with the challenges of sustainability, also opening doors to an international career in the areas of innovation and development of processes and products. This cycle of studies is integrated into a European network of engineering schools through the ERASMUS+ program, allowing students to network on a European scale.
Why CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING?
Students enrolled at the Master of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering at NOVA FCT deepen their training in the development, design, optimization and digitalization of chemical and biological processes with strong industrial implementation. The transition to a sustainable economy motivates a growing industrialization of biotechnological processes. The integrated formation in chemical-biological processes presents itself as very advantageous to respond to the challenges ahead of sustainability and decarbonization. On the other hand, the Master of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering at NOVA FCT offers the opportunity to initiate in the world of scientific research, through the master´s dissertation research project, integrated in two research centers of excellence (LAQV and UCIBIO), in national and international R&D networks, in an academic or business context.

Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
