Master in Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies
Education objectives
The fundamental axes of the Master''''s degree in Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies are the assessment of available resources for the production of bioenergy and the study of sustainable technologies for the conversion of biomass and waste, in the context of the European Directive on the Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources (EU Directive 2018/2001 of 11 December 2018) and the European Waste Directive (EU Directive 2018/851 of 30 May 2018). Masters in Bioenergy acquire concepts and tools necessary to intervene in the areas of biomass production, bioenergy and biomaterials including the valorization of waste and effluents through integrated strategies of Bioeconomics and Circular Economy.
The technical and scientific skills of a Master in Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies are as follows:
- 1. Ability to propose sustainable projects to produce energy from biomass and waste, in order to contribute to the promotion of Bioeconomy and Circular Economy.
- 2. Ability to propose projects for the valorization of biomass resources, according to the concept of Biorefinery, in order to contribute to generate added value at local, regional and national levels;
- 3. Ability to design innovative projects for converting biomass, residues or effluents, for the production of Hydrogen, Methane, Synthesis gas, Biochars and Advanced Biofuels by Thermochemical or Biochemical Technologies;
- 4. Ability to assess and improve the economic viability and sustainability of processes for the conversion of renewable resources, by maximizing their energy efficiency and analysis of their life cycle.
- 5. Ability to intervene in the standardization and certification processes for new products and production systems for obtention of Bioenergy, Biofuels and Biomaterials.
Career opportunities
The Masters in Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies are able to work in production, quality control and safety processes in the areas of biomass, bioenergy, biofuels and biomaterials production, as well as in the area of waste and effluent recovery, in companies, administrative entities and entities without profit-making activities in the forestry, agricultural and agri-food, energy and waste management sectors.
They may also perform research and development tasks in entities of the public and private National Scientific System (Universities, Polytechnic Institutes, and Industry) as well as consultancy tasks in Bioenergy covering the topics mentioned above.

Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UC is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UC with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
