Bioorganic Chemistry
Education objectives
The course aims to train qualified professionals with specific assets in the areas of analysis, characterization and intelligent development of new drugs and biomaterials, streamlining the interaction of drugs with biological systems, and design of new materials and more efficient and sustainable synthetic methodologies.
Students can also choose to carry out a specific study program that allows them to obtain a double master´s degree in Bioorganic Chemistry (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) and in Chemo-informatics (University of Strasbourg) and which consists of a modern educational program , based on consolidated experience at both institutions in teaching chemistry, chemo-informatics and molecular modelling.
The MSc double degree in Bioorganic Chemistry and Chemoinformatics combines advanced training in organic chemistry with a specialization in computational methods. It is associated with the Erasmus Mundus "ChemoinformaticsPlus" programme, which is aimed at excellent students from different backgrounds of chemistry and different cultures. This program trains chemoinformatics experts able to develop new methods and adapt them to different situations and in international environments.
Students will have an interdisciplinary training, particularly in the following areas:
- Organic synthesis of bioactive compounds
- Medicinal chemistry
- Computational chemistry
- Forensic Chemistry
- Supramolecular chemistry and nanochemistry
- Radical chemistry
- Chemical catalysis
- Structural analysis and analytical techniques
Career opportunities
The degree of Master in Bioorganic Chemistry provides access to a career in the following areas and sectors of activity:
- Research and development / Fine Chemistry (synthesis);
- Chemical Analysis and Quality Control;
- Education;
- Environmental Technology;
- Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics;
- Agrochemistry and Food Industry;
- Companies of auditing, consulting and project.

Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
