Regulation and Public Health Risks

Objectives

At the end of the course, students should be able to: 

1. Understand the interaction between Law and Ethics in the scope of Public Health regulation in national, European and international context.

2. Discuss the balance between individual rights and collective interests in the context of Public Health, considering the applicable ethical and legal principles.

3. Understand the structures, principles and mechanisms of Public Health regulation, including legislation, policies and bodies involved.

4. Recognise and address the key ethical and legal issues related to traditional and emerging Public Health issues, including communicable diseases, addictive behaviours and technological advances.

5. Examine the responsibilities and roles of health authorities in promoting Public Health.

6. Discuss the equitative distribution of health resources from an ethical-legal perspective.

Teaching method

The teaching methodology adopted in this discipline includes theoretical classes and theoretical-practical classes. In the theoretical classes, the expository method will be used, with reflection and discussion of the theoretical aspects covered in the program. In the theoretical-practical classes, there will be discussions of practical cases and the completion of related exercises, aiming to achieve the objectives of the program.

Different strategies of practical teaching will be applied, including moral case deliberation and problem-based learning. These pedagogical strategies will involve the discussion of practical cases, role-play activities, and simulation of real scenarios, allowing students to apply the acquired knowledge.

The adopted methodologies aim to promote active student participation, stimulating their critical reflection and the development of relevant practical skills.

Student assessment will be conducted through a final exam that encompasses the syllabuses.
