The Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier of NOVA University Lisbon (ITQB NOVA) is an advanced research and training institution in life sciences, chemistry and associated technologies for the benefit of human health and environment.In a stimulating scientific environment, researchers benefit from excellent equipments, infrastructures, and support services for the accomplishment of national and international research projects, obtained through a competitive way from national and international I&D agencies.
The quality and diversity of the research, the internalization focus, the collaboration with industry and the business structure make ITQB NOVA a reference centre for advanced different areas, are challenged to develop a critical spirit, good communication skills, and an entrepreneurial attitude.
Mobility students
ITQB NOVA actively collaborates with institutions around the world.ITQB NOVA takes into account the merit of candidates when selecting students. The research fellowships integrated into projects are open to all students, national or foreign, who wish to have a research experience at ITQB NOVA. Shorts or long-term internships are also open to foreign students.
ITQB NOVA also receives students through the Erasmus Programme for curricular internships. Upon arrival at ITQB NOVA, the Erasmus Office guarantees the necessary support for their stay in Portugal and monitors the integration at the Institute.

Admission and enrollment

Practical information
Libraries
ITQB NOVA has a library with continuous access through an electronic control, where reference literature can be consulted or requested.The library has several computers available for the examination of reference work and online subscriptions.
Since the beginning, NOVA integrates the national consortium B-ON - Online Knowledge Library. In this way, ITQB NOVA has access to a vast number of collections, journals, and e-books in full text. Through this online platform, the academic community of ITQB NOVA also has the possibility to take advantage of other resources, such as open-access publications, with more advantageous conditions.
Students have access to the wireless network, and all resources are available through any PC installed on the ITQB NOVA network and through VPN.
The library also provides interlibrary loan services and requests for articles from national libraries.
Other equipments
ITQB NOVA has spaces specifically designed to hold various events, such as conferences, meetings, seminars, symposiums, workshops, training actions, and academic activities.The auditorium, located on the entrance floor, has a capacity of 179 seats and is equipped with a central audiovisual control system.
The classrooms and meeting rooms have a capacity that varies between 32 and 50 seats.
The 60 research laboratories occupy a large part of the building, and there is also a Teaching Laboratory.
Interchange programs
As part of the scientific collaborations of the ITQB NOVA research groups, students have the opportunity to carry out part of their research work in laboratories of national and international institutions. Likewise, ITQB NOVA laboratories welcome students from other Universities.Interships
ITQB NOVA provides opportunities for students who wish to participate in ongoing research projects in the laboratories, not only through curricular internships but also short or long-term internships.Internship and project offers can be consulted at https://www.itqb.unl.pt/education/training/short-internships.
When framed in ITQB NOVA university extension courses and after evaluation, the internship periods can be certified with ECTS.
ITQB NOVA annually participates in the Scientific Occupation Program for Young People on Vacation; this internship program, promoted by the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, is aimed at secondary school students who want to learn about the day-to-day life of scientific research.
Scholarships
In order to meet the needs of students whose economic situation makes it difficult or prevents them from continuing higher education, social action grants are available.ITQB NOVA supports students in applying for other grants to carry out research work.
In order to recognize the high-quality level of its students' doctoral theses, ITQB NOVA awards an annual prize to the best thesis carried out at the Institute.

ITQB NOVA has its own restaurant/cafeteria, open for extended hours, from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm.For those who prefer to cook their own meals, ITQB NOVA offers a dining area, equipped with refrigerators and microwaves.
In the immediate vicinity, there are also restaurants and a supermarket.
Special needs facilities
ITQB NOVA building is prepared to receive people with special needs.It has two reserved spaces at the parking area for this purpose, with an access ramp to the building.
Inside the building, the corridors are wide, with non-slip floors. The two elevators provide access to all floors, and adapted bathrooms duly marked can be found on each floor.
Extracurricular activities
ITQB NOVA students have the opportunity to participate in the institutional program of community connection, developing science dissemination and communication actions with schools, seniors, and the general population.ITQB NOVA also makes available to the academic community several interaction opportunities in recreational or sporting activities (https://www.itqb.unl.pt/about-us/interaqb/).
