Master in Science of Geospatial Technologies

Education objectives

The International Master Program (Master of Science, M.Sc.) in Geospatial Technologies is a cooperation of:

- Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA), NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS), Lisboa, Portugal;

- University of Münster (WWU), Institute for Geoinformatics (IFGI), Münster, Germany;

- Universitat Jaume I (UJI), Castellon, Spain.

This Master Program has been selected by the Erasmus Mundus Program of the European Commission as one of the most excellent Master Programs in Europe.

The three-semester English-speaker Masters program will enroll up to 32 students per year.

The first semester at NOVA IMS offers different learning paths, addressing the previous know-how and requirements of the students. The courses at NOVA IMS provide modules in data modeling and GI basics. The second semester at IFGI provides basic and advanced courses in Geoinformatics. In addition, courses in key competencies (project management, research methods) are provided. The Master thesis in the third semester is closely linked to ongoing research projects of one of the partner institutions.

Based on the successful Master's assessment the three universities will award the joint degree "Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Geospatial Technologies".

Applications - 5th call
The applications are online, in NOVA IMS' Applications Portal, where the applicants must fill the form in this platform and upload their Curriculum Vitae and motivation letter. This Master has a special agreement regarding the application fee, so to be exempt of this fee (€51), the applicant must choose “voucher” in the payment method and submit the code: “NOVAIMS_GEOTECH”.

A new application phase for NOVA IMS' postgraduate and master's programs is open from June 18th to July 18thThe vacancies for this Master's Degree have already been filled, but you can check the remaining available programs here.

Degree pre-requisites

The program lasts 3 semesters: 2 correspond to the curricular component (1st semester at NOVA IMS or Universitat Jaume I; 2nd semester at the Institute for Geoinformatics of the University of Münster) and 1 semester for the development of the thesis, in a total of 90 ECTS.

Conditions of admittance

The requirements of the applications are:

  • Adequate Bachelor's degree (or Master's degree);
  • Strong motivation;
  • High-level achievements in previous academic and professional careers.

Evaluation rules

The assessment method will be continuous assessment, i.e. through individual or group work, projects, quizzes, tests/exams, etc.

At the beginning of each academic year, it is up to each teacher of each Curricular Unit (CU) to define how assessment will be carried out in their CUs, and this information is then made available via the student platform.
