Education objectives
Our four-year, full-time structured program provides advanced training in the fields of Economics and Finance. The structure was designed so that in their first year, students are trained in the core basics of Economics, and from the second year onwards, specialize them in the chosen field – Economics or Finance.
Our students have access to the latest tools in their area of focus and can go beyond the research communication barrier by contributing to several evidence-based policy briefs.

Degree pre-requisites
This study program, comprising 240 ECTS(*), will be taught at the Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE).
The elective courses can be taken at another Higher Education Institution,
national or international, or chosen from the offer by NOVA Doctoral School.
Moreover, the PhD candidate must:
- write three papers in accordance with the scientific
journals ’ standards and potentially published in one of those peer review
journals, one per each year (between the 2nd and 4th years of the program),
which is the period during which the thesis is written;
- present his/her papers in international conferences at
least twice (in the 3rd and 4th years of the program);
- present his/her papers in internal seminars in every year
of the Thesis course (2nd, 3rd, and 4th years);
- submit the PhD Thesis in scientific paper format or as a
monograph.
At the end of the Doctoral Program(*), the PhD candidate participates in public
defense, culminating in the approval of the work that represents the great
majority of the Doctoral degree.

Conditions of admittance
According to the article
30 of the DL No. 74/2006, of March 26th, those who meet any of the following
conditions may apply:
a) holders of a master’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) holders of a bachelor’s degree who have a particular relevant academic or
scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out
this study cycle by the legally and statutorily competent scientific body of
the higher education institution;
c) holders of an academic, scientific and professional curriculum recognized as
attesting the capacity to carry out this study cycle by the legally and statutorily competent scientific body of the
school.
Applicants should hold a master’s in Management, Economics, Finance or related
fields, and a good level of English.
The following documentation, along with any other posted at the time of the call, is needed:
- Curriculum Vitae (in English);
- Transcripts of records of undergraduate and graduate
degrees with full list of courses and grades;
- Letter of intent;
- Sample research proposal (up to 6000 words);
- Recommendation letters (minimum 2).

Evaluation rules
The grading scale used is typically ranging from 0 to 20 (10 points is considered the threshold pass grade). In some cases, a qualitative Pass/Fail grading can also be used.
The final classification of the PhD is awarded by the Jury in the public presentation and evaluation of the Thesis.
