Education objectives

This program plans to train a new generation of researchers and non-physicians with a comprehensiv e perspective on health science research, encouraging multidisciplinarity and promoting projects of scientific and technical merit. The student will be encouraged to identify research areas with higher scientific, technological and impact potential. In methodological terms, the student must be able to identify a research and conceptualize and elaborate a proposal of research project, innovative and competitive, according to the most demanding scientific quality standards, integrating consistently the experimental methodologies that best respond to the scientific issues raised. During the course of study, the student will also be trained to evaluate and discuss other projects in this area, completing their scientific training as well as consolidating their capabilities as a peer-reviewer, another essential competence in research activity.

Degree pre-requisites

The study cycle leading to the Doctoral degree includes, as part of the PhD programme, the development of an original thesis, specifically designed for this purpose and appropriate to the nature of the Health Sciences field, in accordance with the branch of knowledge (Medicine/Biomedicine). At the end of this study cycle, the student must undergo an academic examination involving the public defense, evaluation, and discussion of the final work (Thesis).

The study cycle has a duration of 4 years on a full-time basis, and the doctoral student is expected to complete 60 ECTS per academic year, totaling 240 ECTS at the end of the 4 years.

The student must complete 31 ECTS in course units and 206 ECTS for the thesis. In the first-year curriculum, for both branches, students must choose one of five restricted elective units, amounting to 3 ECTS.

Specific admission requirements vary depending on the branch of study:

Branch of Medicine ¿ The following may apply for access to the study cycle:
a) Holders of a Master¿s degree in Medicine or legally equivalent qualification;
b) Holders of a Bachelor's degree with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, which is recognized by the NMS|FCM Scientific Council as demonstrating the ability to undertake this study cycle.

Branch of Biomedicine ¿ The following may apply for access to the study cycle:
a) Holders of a Master¿s degree (or legal equivalent) in Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Health Technologies, or other scientific areas considered relevant by the Scientific Committee/Coordination of the PhD Programme in Health Sciences;
b) Holders of a Bachelor's degree with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, which is recognized by the NMS|FCM Scientific Council as demonstrating the ability to undertake this study cycle.

Conditions of admittance

1 ¿ Students can apply for access to the cycle of studies leading to the degree of doctor: a) Holders of the master's degree in Medicine or in a field of Health Sciences; b) Exceptions to this rule, such as pre-Bologna graduates or holders of a significant academic, scientific or professional curriculum will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Program Coordination.
