Programa Doutoral em Medicina | PhD in Medicine

Education objectives

NMS mission is to promote medical education, to develop quality research on major health problems, and
to provide adequate services to the community. To contribute to the School¿s mission (NMS), the general
objectives of the PhD programme in Medicine are:
- To train a new generation of highly qualified medical researchers, capable of fostering the
advancement of Medicine and Health.
- To promote comprehensive training, including the promotion of critical judgment, the ethical
and deontological dimensions, and in interpersonal relationships.
- To promote relevant research in Medicine i.e., based on questions stemming from professional
practice, oriented to the resolution of clinical or health problems.
- To produce high quality Science (translated into new knowledge, techniques, or methods) and
contribute to the internationalization of knowledge.

The main objective of the programme is to develop students capable of conducting original research projects addressing the following topics:

- Understanding the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms of both normal human function and disease processes or disease groups;

- Developing and investigating cellular and animal models of human diseases;

- Studying the mechanisms underlying specific diseases or disease groups;

- Contributing to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation;

- Promoting translational medicine through the development and application of new technologies for the benefit of patients;

- Developing other technologies to enhance the quality of healthcare;

- Promoting population health;

Studying the epidemiological aspects of population health in general and of specific population characteristics;

Developing health interventions, programmes, services, and policies.

Degree pre-requisites

a) A non-degree-awarding "doctoral course", consisting of an organized set of course units (CUs) corresponding to 30 ECTS (11.5 ECTS in compulsory CUs and 18.5 ECTS in elective CUs), which are transversal to the four branches of knowledge (Clinical Research | Fundamental and Translational Research | Population Health | Innovation and Health Technology);

b) A scientific thesis, original and specifically developed for this purpose, corresponding to a total of 210 ECTS. Approval in a public defense will grant the doctoral degree in Medicine in a given specialty.

Conditions of admittance

Applicants must hold a master¿s degree in Medicine or a legal equivalent.
