Teaching method
The teaching methodology is based in theoretical classes and theoretical-practical sessions with debates on themes and authors. Speakers and experts on certain topics will be invited and study visits to museums and art centres are also proposed.
Evaluation methodology: because this course is organized as a seminar and meets just once a week, it is particularly important that students be in attendance and be prepared to participate. This seminar emphasizes student participation and therefore a part of the final grade grows from student participation in class discussion (40%). A final essay, report or project will be considered, with written and/or oral presentation (60%).
All evaluation elements are mandatory.

Subject matter
The program of study settled for this course is meant to provide students with a solid foundation for critical knowledge of the realities and problems of museums throughout their history as well as their contemporary challenges. It is structured according to six core guidelines of study and discussion:
1. General introduction to the concept of Museum according to ICOM (2004) and the General Law for the Portuguese Museums (2007);
2. The origin of the Museum;
3. Museums and art collecting in early modern times;
4. Art Museums in the 19th century (European and extra-European context);
5. Art Museums in the 20th century;
6. Contemporary debates.
