Optional Area of Communication, Culture and the Arts

Education objectives

1) To have up to date theoretical and methodological training in the field of Communication Sciences;
2) To understand the world from a critical point of view, in particular issues related to the phenomenon of communication;
3) To develop skills required to undertake theoretical and/or practical work in the field of Communication Sciences;
4) To be familiar with the different professional realities and opportunities within the field of study of the course;
5) To be familiar with the concepts, tools and methodologies required to exercise the profession in different areas of communication, namely:
a) in journalism and the news media,
b) in cinema, television and other audiovisual media,
c) in strategic and political communication,
d) in public relations,
e) in the field of artistic and cultural production, management and programming;
6) To be able to carry out innovative and experimental projects in the field of knowledge of the course;
7) To be able to reflect on one’s own personal development in relation to all academically relevant subject matters in the context of Communication Sciences.

Degree pre-requisites

Each student must obtain 180 credits: 84 credits from compulsory courses of the study programme, 66 credits from restricted options and 30 credits from free options or a Minor from another academic area. In their 1st year, students should not enrol in more than 30 credits per semester, respecting precedence rules when they have been set. At the beginning of each semester, the students will be advised on which courses to take, according to what best suits their academic requirements.

Conditions of admittance

Students can be admitted to the Licenciatura Degree in Communication Sciences through the National Call for enrollment in Higher Education, Special Contests, and Special Access Regimes. Additionally, students can gain admission through Readmission or the Change of Institution/Course regime. To apply for higher education through the National Call, students must fulfil the requirements set by the General Directorate of Higher Education (DGES). Evaluation rules

Students are assessed based on the work carried out over a semester, based on class participation, on the presentation of oral and written papers, and tests and exams taken. The results of that assessment are expressed on a scale from 0 to 20. To pass, students must have at least 10 marks. Students who fail, however, have a second chance to retake the final exam. SPECIAL ASSESSMENT REGIMES: - Student-worker - Students with competitive athlete status - Student mothers and fathers - Association leaders - Military personnel - Other special regimes provisioned by law. Students with special educational needs can benefit from teaching and learning conditions adapted to their needs.

Complementary (elective) from any scientific field which can be chosen from other bachelor's degrees at NOVA FCSH - Minimum: 30 ECTS / Maximum: 60 ECTS Complementary (elective) which can be chosen from the curricular units of the bachelor's degree program in Communication Sciences - Minimum: 0 ECTS / Maximum: 30 ECTS. Minor at NOVA FCSH - Minimum: 30 ECTS / Maximum: 60 ECTS - Students must select five course units from those offered within the Minor. The selected units must not include any course units that are part of the curriculum of the degree program in which the student is currently enrolled. Additionally, students may select no more than two course units from each of the degree programs offered by other departments participating in the Minor.
