Literary Translation Practice (German-Portuguese)

Objectives

Learning how to acquire a good performance in:
-understanding German level of language used in the original
- identifying and reflecting upon every difficult question raised in the original text in order to get the best literary solution
- solving translation selected difficulties by gradual and subtle managing of the student's literary competences in understanding the German literary text
- developing the best grammatical and literary skills to build a self assessed performance of the Portuguese version.

Teaching method

Teaching methodologies include exposition lectures aiming to critical reading, encouraging the commentary and historical-cultural contextualized synthesis about literary author and his work as well as role-play reading appointment along each session. Practical understanding and translation exercises  of the literary work or excerpt are a constant responding to the work in progress attitude fostered along every session along which using every kind of dictionary is allowed. Every translation proposal will always be submitted to the analytical perspective supported by the use of monolingual or bilingual dictionaries among other tools to get to the core of the right literary solutions as well as to the final assessment by means of prosody exercises.

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - Two individual written and open-book tests are to be evaluated : eight points each; qualified participation during every session equals four points.(100%)

Subject matter

1.Translating selected full or parts of literary works by G.E. Lessing, Brüder Grimm, H-Hesse or S.Zweig.
2. Strengthening the student's literariness conscience in what regards the acquisition of his best literary skills by translating paradigmatic Lessing's fables and small narratives such as Grimm's Märchen selected according to their size and difficulty challenges.
3.Strengthening the student's literariness conscience in what regards to acquisition of his best literary skills by translating paradigmatic larger excerpts of bigger narratives such as Hesse's and Zweig's literary works according to their modern subject matter.
4. Summoning and attaining the best understanding and translation performance while working the paradigmatic excerpts of these works in what regards the achievement of a better literariness to be attended to in our mother language is the main goal of our work in progress academic attitude.
