Literary Translation Practice (English-Portuguese)

Objectives

1) To understand the main concepts and problems of current translation studies in reference to literary texts, so as to manage resources and methodologies of text analysis and interpretation in Literary Translation.
2) To develop translational competence through intensive practice of literary translation from English into Portuguese, considering different literary genres.
3) To apply analytical criteria and evaluation skills regarding literary translation both as process and product, from a critical and professional angle.
4) To identify and apply translation strategies according to text type and function(s) and with the structural constraints of transference in the Portuguese-English language pair.
5) To develop critical thinking both in the practice of Literary Translation and in research.

Teaching method

The teaching methodology will include a combination of lectures, group discussions, individual and group exercises, as well as conversations with invited professional translators who will share their experience in the field of literary translation. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their translation projects and receive feedback on their choices and approaches, both during class and in written form. This course will provide students with an overview of the different aspects of literary translation, enabling them to develop the skills needed to translate texts from various literary genres and to understand the ethical, professional, and creative issues associated with this practice.

1 - Fundamental Concepts Related to Literature and Literary Translation
- Defining "literature" and the differences between translating literature and other types of texts
- Categorizing texts as literary or non-literary
- The role of the literary translator in the publishing market, their interactions with authors, and the practice of self-translation
- The importance of reading and interpretation in literary translation
- The impact of Artificial Intelligence on the literary translation market
2 - Translation Practice Through Literary Genres
- Translation of source texts of various literary genres, including non-fiction, children's literature, speculative fiction (fantasy and science fiction), dystopias, literary fiction, poetry, and theater
- Peer review of texts and comparison with published target texts, focusing on debating translation choices and strategies
