Technical-Scientific Translation Practice (English to Portuguese)

Objectives

After this course, students should be able to:
1) explain the relevance of translation in creating and communicating knowledge in a range of Sci-Tech areas
2) explain the mediating role of English in creating and communicating knowledge, and use this knowledge to adequately translate, proofread and post-edit
3) explain the characteristics and typologies of scientific and technical texts
4) understand the role of different agents and workflows in scientific and technical translation
5) analyze scientific and technical texts in English and Portuguese, in preparation for translation
6) translate scientific and technical texts via and from English into Portuguese, using suitable translation strategies and digital resources while adhering to ethical and professional standards
7) justify translation solutions, using the metalanguage in the field
8) critically assess own translation and revise (in)complete work.

Teaching method

The course will focus on work carried out in pairs or small groups in the classroom, as well as individual work outside the classroom, through the translation of six texts (representative of different textual typologies in the technical and scientific context), organized as follows: 1) independent reading of a source text sent via email; interaction via email to practice communication in a professional context (specifically within a "Language Service Provision" or LSP setting); 2) translation: outside the classroom, individual translation based on shared resources; submission of finalized target texts via email; in the classroom, reading and defense of the proposed translation solutions; 3) post-translation: feedback on submitted work; revision suggestions and reflection.

Continuous assessment - Group work (30%); Individual Work (40%)(70%), Weekly submission of homework assignments (10%), Written test (20%)

1. Introduction to Sci-Tech Translation and Translation Technologies:
- Understanding the communicative purpose of source texts and translation briefs
- Understanding and following style guides
- The professional ecosystem of technical and scientific translation
- Machine Translation and CAT tools
- Generative AI and its impact on the translation industry
2. Practice in Analysis, Translation, and Editing of Different Text Types
- Institutional translation, translation of instructions and safety standards, translation of scientific articles, medical translation, audiovisual technical-scientific translation, localization, transcreation, translation in museology, etc.
3. Group Translation and Service Provision Practice
- Development of a group project in medical translation
- Practice in interacting with project managers and translation agencies
- Understanding client translation needs and explaining tools and processes
