Education objectives

1) To acquire methodological tools for research and analysis in order to develop learning, critical choice and reflective skills which allow appropriate application of knowledge to practical situations;
2) To acquire basic skills in the area of human sciences thus enabling lifelong learning of theoretical and practical knowledge of foreign languages with a high degree of autonomy;
3) To develop the ability to collect, select and interpret relevant textual and non-textual information, enabling principled decisions which take into account the relevant social, academic and ethical aspects associated to the study of new languages, literatures and cultures;
4) To develop a theoretical and practical knowledge of languages, literatures and cultures set in their national historical contexts;
5) To develop communicative competence in foreign languages, and in the mother tongue, encouraging plurilingualism and interculturality;
6) To develop the ability to work autonomously in the interdisciplinary field of literary, culture and language studies;
7) To develop skills in the application of new technologies to literary, cultural and language sciences.

Degree pre-requisites

The student must complete a total of 180 ECTS: 30 ECTS from the compulsory course units, 102 ECTS from the complementary course framework, and 48 ECTS from any scientific area of other undergraduate programmes or from a Minor at NOVA FCSH. A maximum of 18 of these credits may be taken from the first-cycle course offerings of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. In the first year, students should not enrol in more than 30 ECTS per semester and must respect any prerequisites that may have been established. At the beginning of each semester, students will receive academic advising regarding the most suitable course units for their academic path.

The bachelor’s degree corresponds to Level 6 of the NQF/EQF – National Qualifications Framework / European Qualifications Framework.

Conditions of admittance

Students can be admitted to the Licenciatura Degree through the National Call for enrollment in Higher Education, Special Contests, and Special Access Regimes. Additionally, students can gain admission through Readmission or the Change of Institution/Course regime. To apply for higher education through the National Call, students must fulfil the requirements set by the General Directorate of Higher Education (DGES). Evaluation rules

Students are assessed based on the work carried out over a semester, based on class participation, on the presentation of oral and written papers, and tests and exams taken. The results of that assessment are expressed on a scale from 0 to 20. To pass, students must have at least 10 marks. Students who fail, however, have a second chance to retake the final exam. SPECIAL ASSESSMENT REGIMES: - Student-worker - Students with competitive athlete status - Student mothers and fathers - Association leaders - Military personnel - Other special regimes provisioned by law. Students with special educational needs can benefit from teaching and learning conditions adapted to their needs.
