Medieval History

Objectives

a) To acquire knowledge about the historiography of the period and the main trends of current research.
b) To develop the ability to understand the main events and processes of the period and historical spaces studied
c) To make contact with the methodologies of analysis of historical sources.
d) To develop oral and written exposure skills, integrating vocabulary and specific categories from the Medieval period
e) To develop a reflective and critical attitude.

Teaching method

- 50% of lectures (oral presentation of the subject)
- 50% of practical classes: continuous assessmen, acompanied follow up of assessmant elements 1 to 3

Evaluation method

Continuous assessment - 2 practical assignments in class - written essay: commentary on historiographical text (35%), written essay: commentary on historical document (35%). (70%), Attendance to all practical classes is mandatory. Failure to appear implies a penalty on the individual mark of each evaluation element, between 5% and 10%, depending on the total number of absences.(0%), Written test with consultation, individuaL(30%)

Module 2. The political and military crisis in the Lower Empire, barbarian migrations ans the instalation of new political formulations
Module 3. Islam: from the Early origins to the califate of Baghdad
Module 4. The Bizantine Empire (5th.11th centuries)
Module 5. Carolingian "Europe"
Module 6. Territorialization of power: the time of the castles. The German Imperial dream.
Module 7 From "feudal" monarchies to "administrative" monarchies.
Module 8 The vitality of a civilizational area(12th.14th centuries).
Module 9. Times of Crisis and times of reconstruction (14th-15th centuries)
Módule 10. East and West (12th-15th centuries).
