Bachelor in Language Sciences
Education objectives
1. To understand and to describe the way by which language activity, in both spoken and written forms, is part of a more general set of communicative activities; 2. To acquire basic knowledge, within various frameworks, in main areas of linguistics phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse fundamental for an understanding of language activity; 3. To understand the mechanisms underlying language variation and change phenomena and to use adequate methods and theoretical concepts; 4. To understand and to describe the relationships between language and cognition, language and society, and language and discourse; 5. To develop abilities to analyse, describe and explain the functioning of different natural languages, assessing the appropriateness of distinct theoretical frameworks; 6. To master basic techniques of linguistic data collection, analysis and interpretation; 7. To develop abilities to use new technologies in the study and analysis of spoken and written linguistic productions; 8. To develop competences for the application of the acquired knowledge to different areas, e.g. language pathologies, translation studies, language teaching/learning, elaboration of scientific, didactic and lexicographic tools, among others.

Degree pre-requisites
The student must complete a total of 180 ECTS: 60 ECTS from the compulsory course units, 60 ECTS from the complementary course framework, and 60 ECTS from any scientific area of other undergraduate programmes or from a Minor at NOVA FCSH. A maximum of 30 of these credits can be chosen from the curricular units of the bachelor's degree program in Language Sciences. In the first year, students should not enrol in more than 30 ECTS per semester and must respect any prerequisites that may have been established. At the beginning of each semester, students will receive academic advising regarding the most suitable course units for their academic path.
The bachelor’s degree corresponds to Level 6 of the NQF/EQF – National Qualifications Framework / European Qualifications Framework.
Conditions of admittance
Students can be admitted to the Licenciatura Degree through the National Call for enrollment in Higher Education, Special Contests, and Special Access Regimes. Additionally, students can gain admission through Readmission or the Change of Institution/Course regime. To apply for higher education through the National Call, students must fulfil the requirements set by the General Directorate of Higher Education (DGES). Evaluation rules
Students are assessed based on the work carried out over a semester, based on class participation, on the presentation of oral and written papers, and tests and exams taken. The results of that assessment are expressed on a scale from 0 to 20. To pass, students must have at least 10 marks. Students who fail, however, have a second chance to retake the final exam. SPECIAL ASSESSMENT REGIMES: - Student-worker - Students with competitive athlete status - Student mothers and fathers - Association leaders - Military personnel - Other special regimes provisioned by law. Students with special educational needs can benefit from teaching and learning conditions adapted to their needs.
